The short answer: first work out which cockroach it is. The big dark ones live outdoors and wander in by accident. The small striped ones in the kitchen are German cockroaches, which breed indoors and need baiting, cleaning and usually professional treatment.

🛠️ If It Is One of the Big Outdoor Ones
- Put it back outside. They do not breed in the house.
- Seal the gaps under doors and around windows.
- Keep firewood, bark and pot plants away from the house walls.
- Shake out firewood before bringing it in.
🛠️ If It Is German Cockroaches
1. Clean Up Grease and Crumbs
behind and under the oven, fridge, microwave and toaster.
2. Fix Dripping Taps and Leaks
Cockroaches need water more than food.
3. Seal All Food
and do not leave dishes or pet food out overnight.
4. Use Cockroach Gel Bait or Bait Stations
in the cupboards and behind appliances where you have seen them. Follow the label.
5. Do Not Spray Where You Have Baited
Spray puts them off the bait and drives them deeper into the walls.
6. Check Again with a Torch at Night
after two weeks.
🏡 When to Call a Professional
- You are seeing the small striped ones. A few in the open usually means many more hidden.
- You see cockroaches in the daytime.
- They are still there two weeks after baiting.
- It is a food business or a rental.
