The short answer: a small paper wasp nest you can reach easily can be sprayed at dusk. Any nest in the ground, a bank, a wall or a roof belongs to German or common wasps, can hold thousands, and should be left to a professional.

⚠️ First, Make It Safe
- Keep children and pets well away and mark the spot.
- Do not block the entrance. The wasps will find another way out, sometimes into the house.
- Do not pour petrol or water into the nest.
- Cover food and drinks outside and keep bin lids shut.
🛠️ A Small Paper Wasp Nest You Can Reach
This only applies to a small paper wasp nest out in the open. Never try it on a nest in the ground, a bank, a wall or a roof. A spray can does not reach the nest inside, and the wasps come out at you. Those nests are covered in our wasp nest removal service.
- Wait until dusk, when all the wasps are on the nest and slow.
- Wear long sleeves, long trousers, gloves and glasses.
- Plan your way out before you start.
- Spray the nest with a wasp spray, following the label, then walk away.
- Check it the next day and knock the empty nest down.
⚠️ If Anyone Is Stung
Most stings are painful but settle. Call 111 straight away for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, or many stings at once.
🏡 When to Call a Professional
- The nest is in the ground, a wall, the roof, or anywhere you cannot see all of it.
- Anyone in the house is allergic to stings.
- Wasps are coming inside the house.
- The nest is high up or bigger than a tennis ball.
