How to Get Rid of Fleas in Your House | NZ DIY Guide

A Tauranga Technician’s Guide to Clearing Fleas Yourself, Since Feb 2006

The short answer: treat every pet, vacuum every day for two weeks, and hot-wash the pet bedding. You have to do all three together, because most of the fleas are not on the pet. They are eggs and young fleas in the carpet.

“We’d never called in for help with spiders before, but Karl at Tauranga Pest Control made it simple from start to finish. Better yet, the unwanted feature-walls of spiders are now a thing of the past!

🛠️ Step By Step: How to Get Rid of Fleas

1. Check You Have Fleas

Walk through the house in white socks. Fleas show up as small dark specks that jump.

2. Treat Every Pet in the House

with a flea treatment from your vet, on the same day.

3. Vacuum Carpets, Rugs, Couches and Along Skirting Boards Every Day for Two Weeks

The vibration also makes young fleas hatch, which is what you want.

4. Empty the Vacuum Outside Each Time

into a sealed bag in the outside bin.

5. Wash Pet Bedding, Throws and Cushion Covers on a Hot Wash

and dry them in the sun or a hot dryer.

6. Do the Car and the Places the Pet Sleeps Outside

as well.

⚠️ Why Fleas Keep Coming Back

Flea cocoons can sit in carpet for months and hatch when they feel warmth and movement. That is why an empty house can suddenly have fleas when people move in, and why you may see a few new fleas for a couple of weeks after doing everything right.

🏡 When to Call a Professional

  • You are still being bitten after two weeks.
  • The house has been empty and the fleas hatched when you moved in.
  • You need an end-of-tenancy flea treatment.
  • You have fleas and no pets.
